When it comes to learning how to build a fence, many people start to get worried that this is not going to be a project that they are going to be able to do. After all, it seems as though there are a ton of steps.
The thing is though, even if you have never built a fence in your life, you should have no problem doing it, as long as you are taking all of the best advice that you possibly can.
How To Build A Fence The Right Way
One of the first things that you are going to want to do before learning how to build a fence is check on your city ordinances and the local codes. These ordinances and codes are put into affect for a reason. Once you start to learn what the rules are for where you live, you will then be able to start thinking about the fence designs that you will go with, along with the height, the material used and the placement of your fence.
When it comes to the material used, you are going to want to stick with pressure treated wood so that is it termite and decay resistant. Some examples of this kind of wood would be some types of cypress, western cedar or redwood.
Now, even though you do not have to do this, it would be ideal to make sure that you are only using rust-resistance nails, screws, bolts and hinges. This way, the mechanics of your fence will last longer and look a lot better as the years pass by.
In order to make sure that you are not going to end up with a crooked fence, you will want to put in corner posts and use mason’s line to connect to each post. When you are digging for your post hole, you are going to want to make sure that you are going deep enough in the ground. Have you ever seen fencing that leans?
The problem is most likely that the post holes were not dug deep enough. When fences lean, there is not only a problem of what it will look like visually, but it will be dangerous as well if the fence were to fall on someone.
For example, fences that are six feet in height, you are going to want to have fence posts that are at least two feet deep. You will want your gate posts and the end posts to be at least three feet in depth in order to give ultimate safety and security.
Once you have the basics down and the framing of the fencing put together, you will find that everything will come together very easily. Make sure that your fence posts are evenly spaced and that they are securely attached to prevent the fence from falling apart due to weather, animals or the simple passing of time.
How To Build A Fence – Take Your Time and Do It Right
Now that you are a little more prepared to get the project started, you might want to find a friend or family member to help you. This is a project that you can do on your own, but learning how to build a fence for the first time on your own will always be a little harder than if you had someone nearby to give you a hand.
